Meet the Team Behind This Evidence Review

Four physicians staff the Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center at Chongqing West District Hospital. Dr. Ke He is the responsible physician for this evidence review; the Center Director guarantees the standards the practice is held to, and the dermatologic members of the team carry the assessment of a pigment, barrier or inflammatory condition that needs a diagnosis before anything else is considered.

Long-horizon skin assessment · sun protection and photoageing · grading a longevity claim

Dr. Ke He is Deputy Director of the Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center at Chongqing West District Hospital and head of its skin and laser aesthetic service — and she is the lead physician of this site. A core specialist formerly at the Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery Department of Xinqiao Hospital, affiliated with Army Medical University, she has worked on the clinical front line in skin laser and injectable aesthetics for more than 20 years, serving over ten thousand patients.

On this review her part is the difference between treating a finding and claiming to slow a process. She works from named findings that can be photographed and compared, treats sun protection as the intervention with the evidence behind it rather than as an afterthought, and grades device claims by the endpoint that was measured rather than by what the device is said to do. Where a product is sold on a mechanism, she says that a mechanism is a reason to study something rather than a result, and where the honest answer is that a finding does not need treating at all, she says that as well.

Clinical focus

  • Assessment of named findings against standardised photographs over time
  • Sun protection and photoageing, and why consistency decides the benefit
  • Grading a longevity claim by the endpoint that was measured
  • Telling a treated finding apart from a claim about the rate of ageing
  • When a finding is better left alone than treated

Repairing damage is not slowing a process

A device can reduce a finding that is present, and that is worth having. Whether the process that produced it has slowed is a separate question, and it is the one a longevity claim is actually making. Keeping those two apart is most of what this review does — because the first can be shown and the second, for almost everything sold under this name, has not been.
